At an all-hands meeting last week, CEO Sundar Pichai called on employees to get «more efficient» through AI use, rather than hiring more people.

While some Microsoft divisions are making AI use mandatory, and Amazon saying they will reduce headcount due to AI, Google seems to be struggling with uptake.

Only about 50% of users of an internal AI coding tool, Cider, uses the service weekly, writes CNBC.

There will be more efficient companies
— In this AI moment, I think we have to accomplish more by taking advantage of this transition to drive higher productivity, Pichai said, according to CNBC. And added:

— There will be companies which will become more efficient through this moment in terms of employee productivity, which is why I think it’s important to focus on that.

He added that he was «very optimistic» about how Google is doing, but that they have to be frugal with their resources during a time of high investment, looking instead to increase productivity from AI use.

Urgency to adopt more
Software engineers have the right tools so «everybody at Google can be more AI-savvy,» said Brian Saluzzo, who is building the technical foundations for Google products, at the internal meeting.

— We feel the urgency to really quickly and urgently get AI into more of the coding workflows, he added.

At the Q1 2025 earnings call, Pichai said that 30% of their code was written by AI.
