The idea of the OpenAI browser has been in the works for quite a while and with its release today, it puts ChatGPT firmly on the web.

OpenAI are proudly proclaiming that «the browser has changed» today, touting the benefits of the new browser:
— Atlas makes the web more interactive and conversational. ChatGPT can see the page you’re on, answer questions in context, and help you act without switching tabs, writes Nick Turley, head ChatGPT for OpenAI.
Works almost like a regular browser
The browser works just like a regular one, but you can open up a ChatGPT sidebar on the left of the window and probe the webpages you are on for summaries or more information.
so
If you are looking for cheap flights on Expedia, for example, you can use the built-in agent to search for flights in your chosen time window.
I tried testing that, and it was a little slower than you’d expect — after all ChatGPT has to search through a lot of flights on a lot of different days (I gave it a seven-day window).
Comparison shopping
This is where the agent is most handy, though — on shopping sites where it can fill up your cart from recipe, compare different products and give you feedback on items.
Then there is the text composition feature. If you use web-based email, like Gmail, or file in a lot of forms, you can use the power of ChatGPT right in the app to clean up your texts, or to summarize those long, complex emails some people like to send.
With Atlas, you can also ask questions directly in the address bar and have it summarize webpages for you, no need to actually open up the front page. This could make it really unpopular by webmasters.
«Be a better you»
The head of engineering for Atlas writes that the browser has been a year in the making — which is generations in the fast-moving AI world, but is proud of their efforts:
When I joined @OpenAI last year all I had was an idea: that putting the world’s best AI assistant at the heart of your browsing experience would transform the way we get stuff done online.
Since then we have been able to build an incredible team, and today we’re thrilled to…

He says using Atlas has made him «more curious,» asking «more questions about the web around me,» «finding better deals and interpreting medical data.» He even says he understands his kid’s homework better.
ChatGPT Atlas is available today for Plus, Pro and Business users here for macOS alone. OpenAI says versions for Windows and mobile are coming soon.
