According to journalist Alex Heath on the Sources blog, CEO of Applications Fidji Simo has let OpenAI employees know that they plan to start showing ads in an internal version of ChatGPT, hinting that the work at OpenAI is getting ready for prime time.

Bleepingcomputer also quoted yesterday a report from The Information (paywalled) saying that mockups displaying sponsored information have begun to appear in a sidebar next to the to the main ChatGPT window internally.

This comes after a a November report from OpenAI watcher Tibor Blaho that ad-related code had started appearing on the Android app, that was later put on hold due to Code Red shifting focus to the main ChatGPT models.

— We’re looking at ways to continue offering more intelligence to everyone. As part of this, we’re exploring what ads in our product could look like, an OpenAI spokesperson apparently told The Information, adding that:

— People have a trusted relationship with ChatGPT, and any approach would be designed to respect that trust.

— If I were to make a guess, I don’t think OpenAI would show ads on Plus and Pro plans, but Go might have limited ads later, given how cheap the subscription is (less than $5 and free in some markets), writes Mayank Parmar of Bleepingcomputer.
