ByteDance has yet to publish any real numbers, but videos of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West singing in Mandarin have gone viral on Weibo and x.com with millions of views.
Hashtags related to the video generator have racked up tens of millions of views, Reuters writes.
Too good at deepfakes
The generator is apparently also so good at producing deepfakes from a single pictures or prompts that ByteDance had to enforce identity protections on mobile, and simply turn the feature off on desktop.
The West is also catching up, with a video of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise fighting, getting millions of views and many shares, and there are videos of Optimus Prime vs Godzilla and many other famous characters.
Hollywood reacts
This has caused the Motion Picture Association of America to react, saying:
— By launching a service that operates without meaningful safeguards against infringement, ByteDance is disregarding well-established copyright law.
— I hate to say it. It’s likely over for us, said Rhett Reese, writer of the «Deadpool» movies, according to Variety, — In next to no time, one person is going to be able to sit at a computer and create a movie indistinguishable from what Hollywood now releases.
