The triggering factor appears to be that a company was able to jailbreak the models, potentially getting them to perform harmful actions, an administration official tells Axios.
According to Anthropic, the claim concerns a limited jailbreak and a «minor vulnerability,» not considered a systemwide issue, and says it is impossible to guarantee against this 100% for any model by any provider.
Anthropic disagrees
The practical upshot is that nobody will be able to use either Fable 5 or Mythos 5 until the issue is resolved, as it is likely impossible to screen for nationalities inside the USA.
— We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people, Anthropic says in their statement.
Axios reports that the US administration had tried unsuccessfully to delay the release of the models, resulting in the export controls.
Officials further say that the models should stay restricted until «the national security apparatus» is hardened, which could happen in the next few weeks.
