In a huge move for ChatGPT, all previous chats will be considered something akin to the «memory»-feature in coming updates to the Plus and Pro segments.

The feature is supposed to make ChatGPT more personal and relevant to users, and you wont have to manage the paltry «memories»-storage any more, writes TechCrunch.

Here’s the official announcement from OpenAI:

From bad memory to good
Previously, ChatGPT would try to guess what to remember about your chats and store it for later, but the function easily filled up fast and you’d be greeted with a «memory full»-message and had to manage what it remembers.

Then you would often have to repeat information into new chats, because ChatGPT was a blank on previously entered information.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, says this new feature means ChatGPT will get to know you over time and therefore become more useful:

Information silos, anyone?
There is of course the danger of ending up in a personalized information silo with this, once the AI knows your preferences and starts feeding you only information you like, based on your past preferences and reactions.

For those who don’t like or want the new feature, they can turn it off in Settings>Personalization>Memory and turn off the box for «Reference chat history,» writes Ars Technica.

Not coming to Europe just yet
The feature also comes with caveats and is not released worldwide. The USA gets it today, but it does not get released in the UK, the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

These countries need reviews in order to comply with local regulations, writes TechCrunch, but says OpenAI is committed to bringing this feature to them «eventually.»

There is no word on when it will rolled out to Free users, but it’s coming to Team, Enterprise and Edu users in the next coming weeks. For Pro and Plus, It should be available of this writing.
