Now, Reuters is reporting that it’s just around the corner.
The idea behind making a browser is the same as always; it gives OpenAI more access to user data and browsing patterns, while at the same time offering more ways to integrate their services.
Chat-based browsing?
The upcoming browser will be designed with a ChatGPT-like chat interface «instead of clicking through to websites,» sources tell Reuters, and would allow for more use of upcoming and current agents — like Operator.
These could perform actions for the user on the web, like ordering food, booking hotels, or simply filling out forms.
Strong user base
The new platform would compete with Chrome for user adoption, and the thought behind it is that if even a fraction of ChatGPT’s 500 million weekly users adopt it, it would instantly become a major browser contender.
Chrome is of course the world’s most used browser, and funnels users to Google’s search offerings — as well as feeding Google with user data and offering tracking for ad impressions.
Might be forced to sell Chrome
Google was found to hold an online ad monopoly in April 2025, and one of the remedies requested by the US Justice Department is to force them to divest from Chrome — and OpenAI said it’s interested in buying.
There is some competition for an AI-based browser, as Perplexity just launched their Comet browser, offering AI and Slack integration. This is initially only available to their Max customers, paying $200 a month.
