Google says AI overviews has over 2 billion monthly users, Gemini has 450M

Turns out, when Google forces AI overviews on 2 billion -- they count that as a great success.

The feature would seem like it’s on a roll these days, but most don’t explicitly ask for it and instead get it delivered automatically across 200 markets and languages.

A better metric is the AI Mode feature, that is only available in India and the USA, has to be activated by the user, and now has more than 100 million monthly active users, it was revealed during Alphabet’s quarterly earnings call.

— AI is positively impacting every part of the business, said CEO Sundar Pichai.

Fueling more searches
AI overview is not just giving people the answers they want, right on Google’s pages, but Pichai says they «are also seeing that our AI features cause users to search more as they learn that Search can meet more of their needs.»

That means Google has seen a 10% rise in searches since introducing AI overviews.

During the same period, the Gemini app has now grown to 450 million monthly active users, with «daily requests growing over 50% from Q1,» he said, according to TechCrunch.

In comparison, that is roughly what ChatGPT pulls in a week.

70 million Veo 3 videos
In other numbers, Google says more than 70 million videos have been produced with Veo 3 generation, 50 million people have used «meeting notes» in Google Meet, and more than 9 million people have «built with Gemini,» which I take means writing some code.

Across all of Google’s services, TechCrunch says, they have processed 980 trillion tokens in all, up from 480 trillion just this May.

Alphabet’s overall Q2 revenue was up 14% Year-over-Year at $96.43 billion, you can read their report here.
