OpenAI set to build India data center of «at least» one gigawatt

The monetary number has not been set, but the data center should consume "at least" 1 gigawatt of energy.

After first saying they would open India offices in August, then launching a five dollar subscription in the country — they are now said to be scouting partners for a huge data center, according to Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources.

India is the second largest market for ChatGPT in the world, after the USA, and this marks their first foray into data centers in the country, which usually shuns products not produced locally.

Apple, for instance, had a yearlong headache about selling iPhones in India until it decided to make the phones locally.

One of the largest in India
The «at least» 1 gigawatt data center would be one of the largest in the country, writes CNBC TV18.

It will be part of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s ambition to invest «trillions of dollars» on infrastructure for ChatGPT in the coming years.

It also comes hot on the heels of the first data center in Europe, expansions in the UAE — and a huge, 4.5 gigawatt Stargate center in Texas.

Setting stage for future
With the new office in New Delhi and an Indian data center on the way, they seem to have secured the future for ChatGPT to continue growing in the country.

Google is also investing $6B in a gigawatt center in India, expected to scale up to 6 GW in the coming years.

The location and timeline of the new project are not clear as of yet, Reuters reports, but it is expected to be announced during Altman’s India trip in September.
