While they have no idea yet about how to do it, Meta will use AI chats to "personalize" your ads on December 16.

Starting December 16, 2025, all of your Meta AI interactions will influence what ads you see across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

There is no way to opt out, according to The Wall Street Journal, but they won’t be targeting topics like «religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership.»

Evolution of old policies
Meta says this is just another evolution of «personalizing» their content, which they have a long history of doing:

— Just like other personalized services, we tailor the ads and content you see based on your activity, ensuring that your experience evolves as your interests change, they write.

The idea is that if you have a chat with Meta AI about hiking, they will log that as an interest and surface recommendations of hiking trails and show you ads about boots.

They will also use AI chats to influence what posts and reels you see, in addition to the ads.

1 billion users
Meta AI now boasts 1 billion users across their products per month, so there is a massive pool of untapped interest for Meta, but there is no easy way to tap into it;

— We’re still in the process of building the first offerings that will make use of this data, the privacy policy manager at Meta, Christy Harris, tells Reuters.
