MIT scrambles to counter «pervasive» AI use, as LLMs complete assignments

AI use has been so integrated into student life at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that they are thinking of a complete overhaul of the education experience. They have widely researched the issue since January 2026, resulting in a report called «AI and Education».

— MIT students use AI frequently and pervasively, the findings say, but list different motives and «strongly mixed feelings, from curiosity, creative inspiration, and gratitude to resignation, concern, and anxiety.»

In less than three years of availability of competent AI, that can complete most undergrad assignments and exams, it has driven to a major shift in campus culture, the report says, and it has happened «suddenly and dramatically, creating a clear sense of urgency.»

As 140 million people use ChatGPT for learning math, OpenAI adds visuals

That’s a big number out of 900 million weekly ChatGPT users, accounting for about a sixth of the total usage and outperforming even health questions.

In their announcement, OpenAI says that more than half of U.S. adults struggle with math, and don’t feel confident teaching it to their kids.

Gemini teams with The Princeton Review for realistic, practice SAT tests

Google is touting Gemini’s education features while launching the beginning of a larger program for standard educational tests.

Starting with the American SAT exam, you can now practice with «rigorously vetted» tests right in Gemini — and when you’re done, it will tell you where you went right and wrong.

Purdue will make AI competency a graduation requirement from 2026

With its 52,000 students, it’s the largest AI rollout of any educational facility in the USA.

The new requirement will not focus on coding or developing AI, but rather furthering an understanding of how to work with AI in the students’ chosen fields, in consultation with employers and outside institutions.

This means that every course at the school will have to have some kind of AI element, and Purdue is hard at work on the syllabus for 2026.

— The reach and pace of AI’s impact to society, including many dimensions of higher education, means that we at Purdue must lean in and lean forward and do so across different functions at the university, says Purdue President Mung Chiang in a press release.

The idea is for students to have «the requisite critical thinking skills to understand, evaluate and effectively use AI technologies and to keep pace with their future changes.»

The 2025–26 Student Voice survey, an annual poll of student attitudes by Inside Higher Ed, was devoted to artificial intelligence in its latest edition — and discovered some fascinating results.

Overall usage of generative ai has reached a critical point, with almost every student using it for coursework. But what they use it for is equally interesting.

With help from top AI labs, American teachers to get better, free training

AFT, the teacher's union is partnering with Big AI for better training on ethical classroom use.

With help and funding from Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic, the American Federation of Teachers hopes to educate 400 000 teachers across the USA in ethical AI use in classrooms.

The program will begin right away with virtual, online training for all 1.8 million members of the union, and in New York City with a «three-day training session, including six hours of AI-focused material that highlighted practical, hands-on ways to marry the emerging technology with established pedagogy.»

Already used by a fourth of students
According to the latest data, from February 2025, 79% of teens said they had heard about ChatGPT, while 26% admitted to using it in schoolwork — and there are a plethora of other tools available.
