— MIT students use AI frequently and pervasively, the findings say, but list different motives and «strongly mixed feelings, from curiosity, creative inspiration, and gratitude to resignation, concern, and anxiety.»
In less than three years of availability of competent AI, that can complete most undergrad assignments and exams, it has driven to a major shift in campus culture, the report says, and it has happened «suddenly and dramatically, creating a clear sense of urgency.»
Reduced attendance
There is now decreased student attendance during office hours, less participation in online discussion, and the report also found a «drop in in-person study groups in dorms, libraries, and other study spaces.»
To counter this, the report suggests a campus-wide review focusing student collabs and more social and experimental experiences, and says MIT should also tackle «the nature of grades and grading.»
They are also leaning into AI-forward learning, and say the MIT should provide «AI literacy and responsible and ethical AI use.»
«Every subject taught at MIT will likely need to be reexamined and potentially revamped,» the report concludes, to make sure it is AI-aware, but most importantly to ensure actual learning is being done.
